HYROX is a brand-new athletic event that blends functional training, running, strength, and endurance into a single, uniform competition. In contrast to traditional running, HYROX requires participants to switch between challenging functional workouts and running.
HYROX is a summertime sporting event that puts everyone to the test, whether they are casual gym attendees, runners, strength training enthusiasts, or competitive athletes.
However, what exactly is HYROX? What is the process? What are the workouts in this competition? And who is able to participate in this event?

What Is HYROX?
HYROX is an indoor fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations.
The basic HYROX format is:
1 km running → 1 workout station → 1 km running → 1 workout station…
This is repeated 8 times, giving:
- 8 km total running
- 8 functional workout stations
One characteristic that defines HYROX is its use of a standardized format. The races have a similar format no matter the location, allowing the athletes to compare results in various races.
HYROX started in Germany in 2017 and has since developed into an international fitness races format.
How Does a HYROX Race Work?
A standard individual HYROX race follows this sequence:
| Stage | Running | Workout |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 km | 1,000 m SkiErg |
| 2 | 1 km | 50 m Sled Push |
| 3 | 1 km | 50 m Sled Pull |
| 4 | 1 km | 80 m Burpee Broad Jumps |
| 5 | 1 km | 1,000 m Row |
| 6 | 1 km | 200 m Farmer’s Carry |
| 7 | 1 km | 100 m Sandbag Lunges |
| 8 | 1 km | 100 Wall Balls |
HYROX redefines fitness competition. The race combines running with functional strength and endurance activities to create a completely new test of athletes’ abilities that consists of running, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, lunging, and repeating these high-repetition movements.
The main difference between HYROX and traditional running events is that HYROX does not focus solely on endurance. Also, unlike traditional strength contests, it does not test maximal strength. Instead, HYROX investigates the ability of athletes to apply force repeatedly and at the same time to sustain cardiovascular performance.
The combination of the above factors allowed HYROX to develop as a global fitness racing format which uses the same structure of the race in all locations. According to HYROX, each of its races consists of 1 km of running and one functional workout performed eight times which results in a total of 8 km of running and eight functional workout stations.
The History of HYROX
HYROX is a fitness-related competition that began in Germany in 2017 by the joint efforts of Christian Toetzke and the world-class athlete and medal winner Moritz Fürste. The competition was born with the idea of creating an easily accessible and convenient sport format for non-professionals as well as sportsmen.
The principle of HYROX is very simple:
Find the combination of physical efforts bodybuilders do in gyms and running, and use them in a standardized competition.
Unlike any other sports activities shown by rivals in different places, the idea of HYROX lies in the fact of using the same structure of the events at different locations.
This factor allows athletes to obtain something important:
the challenges of gymnastics would become the measure of fitness achievement.
At the end of the competition, an athlete would know their results and the time it took to complete the course. You can also repeat the exercises and compare your fitness challenges to other athletes.

HYROX Categories Explained
HYROX isn’t limited to individual racing.
HYROX Open
The standard individual category.
It provides a way for fitness enthusiasts to experience the full race without using Pro-level loads.
HYROX Pro
Designed for experienced racers and uses heavier weights.
HYROX Doubles
Two athletes participate together.
They run the 1 km sections together and can divide the workload at the workout stations according to the rules.
HYROX Relay
Four people form a team.
Each team member completes two 1-km runs and two workout stations.
This makes HYROX adaptable to people who want a team experience rather than completing the entire race individually.
HYROX vs CrossFit
HYROX and CrossFit share some functional movements, but their competitive structures are different.
| HYROX | CrossFit |
|---|---|
| Standardized race | Workouts vary |
| 8 × 1 km running | Running varies |
| Fixed 8 stations | Exercise selection varies |
| Primarily endurance + functional fitness | Broad strength, conditioning and skill |
| Comparable race structure | Competition programming varies |
| Performance measured through race time | Performance depends on workout/event |
